It was late, and Zara's room was very quiet. Then, from under the bed, came a tiny rustle.

Zara: Pickles, did you hear that? Something is under my bed.

Pickles: I heard nothing. I am a cat. Cats are never scared.

Mumble: Um... hello? Please don't be scared. I'm a little bit scared too.

How does Zara say hello?

  • Shine the torch under the bedThis time
  • Whisper a friendly hello

Zara lay on her tummy, clicked on her torch, and shone it under the bed.

Mumble: Ah! Too bright! Too bright! Could you point it at my toes instead?

Zara: Oh! Sorry. You're not scary at all. You're fluffy!

Out came a small, round, fluffy monster, blinking in the soft light.

Mumble: It's so dark under there. And that cat keeps staring at me.

Pickles: I stare at everyone. It is my job.

Zara: Don't worry, Mumble. Let's make you comfy first.

How does Zara make Mumble comfy?

  • Share her softest blanketThis time
  • Build him a pillow fort

Zara pulled her softest blanket off the bed and tucked it all the way around Mumble.

Mumble: Ooh. It smells like cookies and bedtime.

Pickles: That is my blanket. But fine. Just this once.

Snug in his blanket, Mumble looked around the dark room.

Mumble: Zara? Monsters are scared of the dark too, you know. Very scared.

Zara: I used to be. But I know two tricks. Want to try one?

Which trick helps Mumble?

  • Count the stars togetherThis time
  • Sing the not-scary song

Zara and Mumble pressed their noses to the window and counted the stars, one by one.

Mumble: Forty-five, forty-six, forty-seven! The dark is full of little lights!

Zara: See? The dark is just the sky with its pyjamas on.

With forty-seven stars still twinkling, everyone climbed back into bed.

Mumble: Zara? Can I sleep next to your bed tonight, instead of under it?

Zara: Of course. Goodnight, Mumble. Goodnight, Pickles.

And for the very first time, the monster under the bed fell fast asleep. So did Zara.

What it's about

The dark feels smaller when you're brave enough to say hello to it, and everyone, even a monster, gets scared sometimes.
