Tonight, Mia waited by the garden gate. At four o'clock exactly, a very small guest arrived with a very big bow.
Sir Hopsworth: Ahem. Sir Hopsworth, of the Park, arriving for tea. I have brought my own spoon.
Coconut: A frog! A real frog in OUR garden! Mia, watch me, I can do my trick for him! Watch!
Mia: In a minute, Coconut! Welcome, Sir Hopsworth. Grandpa says every guest needs a house. What kind shall I build?
What kind of house should Mia build?
- Stack flowerpots into a towerThis time
- Give him her softest sock
- Turn a teapot into a house
- Build it out of biscuits
Mia stacked one pot, then two, then five. The tower wobbled. Grandpa held the ladder and did not say a word.
Mia: Don't wobble, don't wobble... one more pot... There! The tallest frog house in the world!
Sir Hopsworth: A tower! With a view of the lettuces. Madam, I am deeply moved.
The flowerpot tower stood taller than Mia. Everyone cheered. Well, nearly everyone. Something white had crept under the table.
Mia: Coconut? Coconut! ...Oh. Why are you under the table? Are you sulking?
Coconut: No. This is my sulking spot, but I'm NOT sulking. You built HIM a whole house.
Mia looked at the brand-new house, then at her oldest friend. Her tummy went all wobbly.
How does Mia cheer Coconut up?
- Make a big speech about CoconutThis time
- Crawl under and cuddle him
- Give Coconut an important job
- Do the wiggle-bottom dance
Mia climbed onto the garden chair, took a deep breath, and spoke to the whole garden.
Mia: Attention, garden! This is Coconut. He was my friend FIRST, and he is still my best dog. The end.
Sir Hopsworth: Hear, hear! A first-rate speech. First-rate dog, too.
Coconut: ...Did everyone hear that? Best dog. Okay, I'm coming out. For the speech. NOT for the frog.
Coconut came out for the speech, nose in the air, one eye on the frog. Then, plip, plop, it started to rain.
Sir Hopsworth: Rain! And your grandfather with tea and an umbrella! Madam, your garden thinks of everything.
Coconut: He LIKES rain? Nobody normal likes rain. I'm sitting on the OTHER side of Mia.
Mia: Grandpa, I've got a frog on one side and a dog on the other. How do I make them friends?
Grandpa: That's not a Grandpa job, love. That's a girl-in-the-middle job.
How does Mia make them friends?
- Jump in the puddle togetherThis time
- Share one biscuit three ways
- Ask what they love most
- Teach Sir Hopsworth to bark
Mia stamped into the biggest puddle with BOTH red boots. Splash! Sir Hopsworth leapt in after her, singing.
Mia: Come on, Coconut! Puddles are better with three!
Coconut: Absolutely not. ...One paw. ...Two paws. SPLASH! Ha! Frog, your monocle's all wet!
Sir Hopsworth: Ahem. I have been splashed by a dog. ...Do it again.
Sir Hopsworth: Goodnight, madam. Goodnight, Coconut. My monocle is still wet from your splash. Worth it.
Grandpa: One frog under the window, one dog on the bed, one girl in the middle. Not bad for a Wednesday.
Coconut: Mia? I decided. You can have a frog AND a dog. But the bed is mine.
Mia: The bed was always yours, Coconut. Night, Sir Hopsworth. Night, best dog.
And so Mia drifted off, a dog on her feet and a frog with a monocle asleep in his very own house.
