Today was Leo's very first swimming lesson. The big pool went splish, splash, splosh. It smelled like... pool.

Rexy: Leo! Listen. My tail is staying dry. Dry, dry, dry!

Dad: Come on in, buddy. The water's lovely. I've got you.

Leo: It's so big, Dad. My tummy feels wobbly.

How does Leo get in?

  • Jump into Dad's armsThis time
  • Climb down, step by step
  • Tuck Rexy in a towel first
  • Slide in like a seal

Leo: Watch this, Rexy! Ready, Dad? Here I come!

SPLASH! Leo jumped right into Dad's arms. Water went everywhere. Even on Dad's beard.

Dad: Whoa! Got you! Got you! What a jump!

Rexy: That splash nearly got my tail. Nearly!

Coach Bea: Okay, swimmers! Time to put our faces in the water. Watch me. Bloop!

Rexy: Faces? In the WATER? But Leo, you need your face!

Leo: Dad... my tummy's wobbly again. My face says no.

How does Leo put his face in?

  • Count to three with DadThis time
  • Blow bubbles like a dinosaur
  • Let Rexy try it first
  • Dip one ear, then the other

Dad: Squeeze my hands, buddy. Ready? One... two...

Leo: Wait! ...Okay. Okay. THREE!

Sploosh! Face in. Bubbles out. Rexy couldn't look. And up came Leo, dripping and grinning.

Leo: Dad! Dad! I did it on three! Did you see?

Dad gave Leo a big wet high five. Then Leo saw a small girl at the steps. She was not getting in.

Nia: No. No, no, no. Too big. Too splashy.

Leo: Dad, look. She's scared. Like I was.

How does Leo help Nia?

  • Show Nia how he did itThis time
  • Tell Nia he was scared too
  • Count to three with Nia
  • Ask Rexy to make her laugh

Leo: Watch me, Nia! Face in... and UP! See? Just wet!

Nia: Just wet? ...Okay. One step. Two steps. SPLASH!

In came Nia! Splash, splash, splash went Leo and Nia. Even Rexy got splashed. Dad clapped his big wet hands.

That night, Leo's curls were still damp. He had shown Nia how, and Nia had done it too.

Dad: Hey, buddy. Were you scared today? At the pool?

Leo: Yes. Super scared. But I did it. Me and my wobbly tummy.

Dad: Scared, and you did it anyway. That's the bravest kind of brave there is. Night night, swimmer.

Rexy: Psst. Leo. My tail got wet today. I was scared. And it was fine.

What it's about

Brave is not the same as not scared: it is being scared and trying anyway, one small step at a time, and then showing someone else how.
